About Sacred Earth Travel

What a long, strange journey it has been!

This is the story of Sacred Earth Travel, and how it all began.

I first ventured to Central and South America to study Ethnobotany in 1993. I dreamt about travelling the world to learn about people, plants, and the cultures that weave them together. After several extended stays in the magical rainforests of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Peru, I wanted to share my passion with the world. The idea of the ‘Sacred Earth‘ website was born.

Sacred Earth was intended as a space where I could share my passion for nature and sustainability, and promote the then very new concept of Eco-travel. Starting out in 1998, Sacred Earth Travel was one of the first dedicated eco-travel agencies on the web.

I wholeheartedly believe, that done right, travel can be an ideal route to sustainable development. Eco-travel can help native communities to generate much-needed financial resources while preserving their natural environment and knowledge. At the same time, travellers benefit by connecting with nature and native cultures in a deeply personal way.

The project grew slowly, but steadily, as I built relationships with like-minded people and travel professionals in Central and South America.

A multitude of eco-travel agencies has sprung up since. Many are genuine, others are merely riding the green bandwagon. There are many shades of green.

Some 15 years after the initial launch, the project had grown so large that I separated them into two succinct websites. Sacred Earth focuses on Ethnobotany, green living, and nature education, and Sacred Earth Travel specializes in creating unique, tailor-made ecologically sensitive travel adventures in Central and South America and now also in Europe and in Asia.
