Itinerary
Venture off the beaten track into the awe-inspiring interior of Iceland and along contrasting coastal landscapes. On this round trip of the island you will discover pretty fishing villages, mountains, and fjords, bubbling geothermal areas and dramatic Highland scenery in addition to many of Iceland’s most popular attractions along the way. Available from 15 June to 31 August.
Day 0
Arrival Day – Reykjavík
You are met upon arrival at Keflavik International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Reykjavik. Enjoy the city’s excellent shops and restaurants, vibrant cultural scene and energetic nightlife.

Day 1
The South Coast
Tour the South Coast, viewing the magnificent waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss along the way. You can also visit the folk museum at Skógar or the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Centre which portrays the famous volcanic eruption in 2010. Admire the vast black sands and Cape Dyrhólaey with its varied birdlife on the way to the beautifully located village of Vík.

Day 2
Vatnajökull National Park
Visit Skaftafell with its contrasting glacier landscapes and many walking and hiking paths. Take a tour out to Cape Ingólfshöfði on a hay wagon or go on an unforgettable boat trip on the picturesque Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Admire Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. Glacier tours can be booked in advance. Continue to the fishing village of Höfn known for its delicious lobster.

Day 3
The Eastfjords
Enjoy the scenery of tall and uniquely formed mountains along the Eastfjords. Visit pretty fishing villages along the way such as Djúpivogur (a Cittaslow municipality), Stöðvarfjörður with Petra’s unique stone collection and Fáskrúðsfjörður, known for its French heritage. Continue to Egilsstaðir, located next to the Lagarfljót river where the sea serpent ‘Lagarfljótsormur’ allegedly lives.

Day 4
Lake Mývatn area
Visit the many attractions within the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park including Ásbyrgi Canyon, Hljóðaklettar (‘Echo Rocks’) and the powerful Dettifoss Waterfall. Go whale watching from the charming harbor town of Húsavík. Explore the steaming geothermal area at Námafjall. Stroll along the mystical lava fields of Dimmuborgir. Visit Lake Mývatn with its rich bird and plant life.

Day 5
Akureyri and the North
Head towards Akureyri town, stopping to admire the beautiful Goðafoss Waterfall (‘Waterfall of the Gods’) along the way. Akureyri – nicknamed the ‘Capital of the North’ – has many cultural attractions, parks and geothermal swimming pools to enjoy. Continue to Skagafjörður, a district renowned for its horse breeding. Visit the folk museums at Glaumbær and Víðimýri.

Day 6
Kjölur highland route
Take the Kjölur route between glaciers Hofsjökull and Langjökull through the stark, uninhabited interior of Iceland. Stop by the natural hot spring river at Hveravellir for a relaxing dip before continuing south. In the 18th-century an outlaw named Fjalla-Eyvindur and his wife Halla lived here for 20 years, the hot springs helping them to stay warm!

Day 7
The Golden Circle
Tour the famous ‘Golden Circle’ including Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir hot spring area with it spouting Strokkur and historic Þingvellir National Park, located on the Icelandic rift zone. You can also visit Skálholt cathedral and Kerið, a 3,000-year explosion crater, en route back to Reykjavik.

Day 8
Reykjavik
Return to Reykjavik to drop off your car and catch your flight home, or to add some extra days.

Country hotels
More facilities and services and more luxury in comfort. All rooms in cat. IV have private/en-suite bathrooms and are better equipped. On-site bars/restaurants offering buffets and/or á la carte menus open year-round or summer only.
Bed and breakfast
Bed and breakfasts generally have a more intimate atmosphere. Guests stay in the home of the hosts or in a separate building on the premises. Rooms range from simple to the more comfortable with shared or private/en-suite bathrooms. Meals other than breakfast are sometimes available.
Rooms in bed & breakfasts and country hotels can be of four different categories.
Category I | standard
These rooms are simple, comfortable and adequate. Beds are made and rooms are cleaned daily. Clean towels are supplied. Guests have access to a communal lounge. Breakfast is included.
Category II | standard
In addition to category I, all rooms have hand basins and are usually of a higher standard and better equipped. Breakfast is included.
Category III | comfort
In addition to categories I and II, rooms have private/en-suite bathrooms. Breakfast is included.
Category IV | comfort
Rooms with private/en-suite bathrooms in country hotels. Better equipped with TV and sometimes tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast is included.
Self-catering cottages or apartments
All cottages/apartments have cooking facilities and the necessary kitchen utensils and crockery for the registered number of guests. Duvets are supplied but guests rent the bed linen. A great choice for families or smaller groups.
Cottages/apartments are rented out both on a daily and weekly basis. They must be neat and in good condition, have running water and a WC. Duvets are supplied but guests are required to rent bed linen. Cleaning is usually not included in the price; guests are normally required to clean themselves before departure, although sometimes cleaning services are available at an extra fee. All cottages/apartments have cooking facilities and the necessary kitchen utensils and crockery for the registered number of guests. Breakfast is sometimes available on request. Self-catering cottages/apartments can be of four categories: A, B, C or D. The difference between the categories is mainly a question of size, extra facilities, and comfort.
Category A
These cottages/apartments are simple and need only be one room with WC facilities. Cooking facilities and refrigerator.
Category B
These cottages/apartments have at least one separate bedroom. Coffee maker. Shower facilities in the area.
Category C
In addition to the requirements of A and B, there is a shower inside the cottage/apartment and at least one well-equipped bedroom w/bedside tables and a wardrobe. Coffee-maker and toaster. Veranda with garden furniture and barbeque facilities.
Category D
These are cottages/apartments with requirements of overall good standard. At least one well-equipped bedroom with bedside tables and wardrobe. Comfortable and tasteful furniture. Veranda with garden furniture, barbeque facilities and hot tub/Jacuzzi.
