Itinerary

Day 1
Start your journey arriving to Puerto Maldonado, where our staff will welcome you and provide the necessary information for your stay. Navigate by outboard motorized canoe along the Madre de Dios River to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción for approximately 25 minutes. Enjoy LUNCH with organic ingredients and native flavors. After lunch, take a walk through CONCEPCION TRAILS, our inside property nature trails, where you will discover and learn about primary and secondary rainforest, its components, uses, transformations by the human being, and its relevance for the world. At dusk navigate by outboard motorized canoe, at the TWILIGHT RIVER excursion. Sailing on the Madre de Dios River, you will learn about its ecosystem, Amazonian creeks, nocturnal animals’ behavior, and the southern constellations. In the evening enjoy a nice DINNER in the Casa Grande’s dining room.
Day 2

New experiences ahead and after taking a nutritious buffet BREAKFAST, get ready for a long trek through terra firma into the Tambopata National Reserve towards LAKE SANDOVAL. Here you will understand why Madre de Dios is called the biodiversity capital of Peru, while learning about the Reserve’s conservation efforts and the lake’s formation. Navigate by dugout canoe across this mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), blue and yellow macaw (Ara ararauna), red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus), black caiman (Melanosuchus niger), and one of the world’s biggest freshwater scaled fish, the paiche (Arapaima gigas).

Back to the lodge for LUNCH, and later on the INKATERRA CANOPY WALKWAY & ANACONDA WALK await for you. Take a 20-minute ride by outboard motorized canoe to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center where you will learn about its construction and the conservation projects of ITA-Inkaterra Asociación (NGO). Ascend one of the two 98-foot towers (30 m.) and cross the 7 hanging bridges that connect the treetops at 91 ft. high (28 m.). Enjoy the breathtaking vistas and get the chance to watch white-throated toucans (Ramphastos tucanus), woodpeckers, trogons, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) and the three-toed sloth (Choleopus hoffmani). After descending keep on feeling the incredible primary rainforest energy going along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the swamps (aguajales). You will learn about the fauna and flora of this flooded ecosystem.

At night get ready for an adventure at the RAINFOREST BY NIGHT excursion, where you will explore the Amazon rainforest that gives way to nocturnal animals who display intriguing behavior patterns, and enhanced senses as adaptation mechanisms. Listen to nocturnal living nature sounds, and penetrate this hidden world. Return to the lodge and enjoy a nice DINNER.

Day 3

The sun rises once again and after an early BREAKFAST, you will take our NATIVE FARM excursion where you will be able to learn local techniques of cultivation and taste some of the local products. Then visit the BOTANICAL GARDEN, discover the immense variety of medicinal plants considered part of the “natural pharmacy” used by the inhabitants of the Amazon region. Compare the medicinal uses of local medicine with traditional remedies.

Getting back to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion you will have LUNCH. Take a rest and get ready for the COCHA water excursion. Enjoy a dugout canoe ride on the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion natural pond (cocha). Try native fishing applying the “catch and release” techniques, as you enjoy the scenery observing hoatzins (Opisthocomus hoazin), a diversity of fly catchers, and gray-necked woodrails (Aramides cajanea).

Disembark at the remains of Fitzcarrald steamboat; learn about its history and how it inspired Inkaterra to ask Werner Herzog to film the award-winning “Fitzcarraldo”, best director at Cannes, 1982. End up your day with a pleasant DINNER.

Day 4
On your last day before leaving Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion, there is still much more to experience. The sun rises once again and after an early BREAKFAST, get ready for the CASTAÑA excursion. Take a walk within the hotel grounds to a small hut where our explorer-guides will teach you the importance of the Brazil nut Tree in the local economy of Madre de Dios. Learn how the Brazil nut is collected using traditional tools and techniques, and try to open one of them using a machete and a nutcracker, to finally enjoy a fresh Brazil nut. Back to the lodge feed your appetite with a healthy and rich LUNCH. In the afternoon, visit the CACAO plantation at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion and take part of the chocolate making process. Learn how to select the fresh cacao fruits, discover how the seeds are fermented and sundried. After pealing the toasted cacao seeds and grinding them into an aromatic paste, end the excursion with a selection of treats made from our organic chocolate. You will be able to participate in the INLAND COLLPA during the evening, where you will see different species and their night routines by observing through our “blinds”. End up your day with a pleasant DINNER. www
Day 5
After BREAKFAST buffet, take a ride back to Puerto Maldonado by outboard motorized canoe. Arrive at the Butterfly House where you may wait for your flight back home or to your next destination, while visiting this beautiful BUTTERFLY HOUSE and learning about the fascinating transformation of these colorful insects.

Flights from Lima to Puerto Maldonado depart from Jorge Chavez airport’s domestic terminal and take about 3 hours. Most flights stop in Cuzco before continuing to Puerto Maldonado. Flights from Cusco depart from the domestic terminal of Velasco Astete airport and take around 45 minutes.

 

Located only 8 kilometers / 25 minutes downriver from Puerto Maldonado, Hacienda Concepción can only be reached by taking a scenic canoe ride from the town. The lodge lies in a former cacao and rubber plantation, on the grounds of what back in the 50’s,  was “Fundo Concepción”, an Amazon Catholic medical mission center, our child friendly lodge is located in an enchanting and serene lush setting within 819 hectares of natural rainforest. The rainforest acts as a buffer zone between the Tambopata National Park Reserve and the shores of the vast Madre de Dios River, making the location of this new lodge quite unique and wonderfully remote.

Weather and what to wear:

The weather is tropical, with an average temperature of 32°C (89° F), ranging from 25°C (77° F) to 42°C (107° F). The hotter season usually ranges from December to March and comes with frequent afternoon rainfall. Between June and September, you may need some warmer clothing since occasional “friajes” or Patagonia Cold Fronts can reduce the temperature to 10°C (50°F). Cool comfortable cotton clothes are required to counter the heat while sweaters and jackets may be handy at night. See Equipment and Luggage. Visitors must anticipate the extreme heat and humidity of the jungle by finding out the exact weather condition at the time of travel in order to be ready with clothing and accessories.

Health

The US Travel Advisory for Peru usually recommends yellow fever shots and malaria-preventive medication for tourists travelling to rainforest regions. Please consult your doctor at least a month before visiting the Amazon Basin. No cases of yellow fever or malaria have ever been reported on our properties. Water: Inkaterra uses filtered river water that can be used for showers but is not safe to drink. Bottled drinking water is provided to all guests.

Communications/Phone

There is limited telephone access and no mobile phone coverage at the lodge. In case of emergency, the Guest Service Department can contact the office in town via radio.

Currency/Foreign Exchange

The official currency is the Nuevo Sol (PEN) divided into 100 céntimos. Inkaterra accepts major credit cards. There are no facilities to exchange Travelers’ checks; travelers are advised to have cash (in Soles) on hand as foreign currency exchange is limited. It is advisable to exchange to Soles before going to the lodge, though payment is accepted in both US Dollars and/ or in Soles. ATMs are available only in main cities.

Security

At Hacienda Concepcion every room has a locked drawer in case any traveller wants to secure any valuables.

EQUIPMENT AND LUGGAGE

It is important that you bring only necessary clothing and equipment to the lodge. Due to weight and space limitations on the boat, passenger luggage is limited to 10 kg. (22 lbs.) per person. Excess luggage can be stored at the headquarters 10min from the airport.

CONSERVATION

Initiatives on biodiversity conservation are managed by NGO Inkaterra Asociación. These include the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a bridge system at 100ft above the ground designed to study wildlife in the rainforest canopy; the Spectacled Bear Rescue Center at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, in benefit of the only bear species native to South America; the world’s largest native orchid collection (372 species) found in its natural habitat; and the World Birding Rally, an international competition unique for its non-stop modality, which aims to confirm Peru as a top destination for bird watching.

The first Peruvian enterprise to be declared carbon neutral (1989), Inkaterra mitigates the effects of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest whilst contributed with carbon sequestration through the preservation of Peru’s first ecological concession, with more than 10,000 hectares of virgin rainforest. As determined by Professor Tim Baker (University of Leeds), one hectare conserved within Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica o Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion captures 200 tons of carbon.
