Hacienda Urubamba ⋆ Sacred Earth Travel

Hacienda Urubamba

Hacienda Urubamba is a contemporary hacienda-style hotel in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in-between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Immersed in the countryside in a gorgeous area, Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba spans approximately 100 acres surrounded by imposing green mountains.

All rooms in the Casa Hacienda and stand-alone luxury casitas feature breathtaking views of the valley, immersing guests in open space, serenity and relaxing solitude. Architecture and interiors are inspired on the area’s cultural history, with colonial furniture, authentic Inca masks and handcrafted woodwork that add to the hacienda’s local charm.

An Earth to Table concept is operated with a 10-acre organic plantation where guests are welcome to pick their own produce. Carbon-free crops such as quinoa, Urubamba giant corn, medicinal herbs and a variety of potatoes are farmed with traditional hand tools and oxen, as done centuries ago.

WEATHER AND WHAT TO WEAR

The Valley of Urubamba has a semi-dry and warm climate, with temperatures varying from -5°C (28°F) to 18°C (64°F) in areas from 9200 to 12500 feet above sea level; while in areas below 8200 feet above sea level, temperatures oscillate between 9°C (48°F) to 23°C (73°F).

The driest month is June and the rainy season goes from November to March. We recommend bringing a rainproof coat and warm clothes for nighttime or places without heating. Sunlight in the region is strong and the use of sunblock is important.

HEALTH/INSURANCE

Although no vaccinations are officially required, visitors are advised to take precautions, especially if planning to travel to jungle regions. The most common ailments for travellers are diarrhea and altitude sickness. Health care is limited in these areas, so safety measures must be taken regarding food and alcohol intake.

COMMUNICATION/ TELEPHONE

Within Peru, when making international calls, dial 00 + country code + city code + telephone number. For inter-city calls: 0 + city code + telephone number. Public telephones work with coins and pre-pay cards that can be acquired in kiosks and supermarkets. Make sure your pre-pay card is for the phone company of your choice. Mobile phones for local and foreign calls can be rented at the Lima Airport. Wi-Fi is available in the majority of hotels in Peru.

ACCLIMATIZATION

Acclimatization is a process by which the body gets used to the low oxygen found in a high-altitude environment. Considering the varying altitudes across Peru, we suggest travelers start the journey in lower destinations before ascending to high-altitude cities such as Cusco. Thus, the body will adapt to more demanding weather conditions.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS PREVENTION

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) or soroche is a pathological condition that is caused by acute exposure to low air pressure usually above 2,400 meters (approximately 8,000 feet). Machu Picchu is located at 2300 meters/7600 feet above sea level. The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high too quickly; symptoms include a headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, sleep disorder, among others. Before your travel to a high altitude destination, avoid eating too much, and on the arrival day itself, also eat less to avoid altitude sickness. If you stay at a high altitude, rest. Limit any walking or activity; you can explore the area, but take it easy especially on the first day. Drink plenty of water and avoid taking alcoholic beverages.

LUGGAGE TRANSPORT ALLOWANCE

Please take note that railway companies have imposed luggage limitation on the trains to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo. If going to

Machu Picchu, it is important that you bring only necessary clothing and accessories for your visit to the citadel.

CONSERVATION

Initiatives on biodiversity conservation are managed by NGO Inkaterra Asociación. These include the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a bridge system at 100ft above the ground designed to study wildlife in the rainforest canopy; the Spectacled Bear Rescue Center at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, in benefit of the only bear species native to South America; the world’s largest native orchid collection (372 species) found in its natural habitat; and the World Birding Rally, an international competition unique for its non-stop modality, which aims to confirm Peru as a top destination for bird watching.

The first Peruvian enterprise to be declared carbon neutral (1989), Inkaterra mitigates the effects of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest whilst contributed with carbon sequestration through the preservation of Peru’s first ecological concession, with more than 10,000 hectares of virgin rainforest. As determined by Professor Tim Baker (University of Leeds), one hectare conserved within Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica o Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion captures 200 tons of carbon.
