Manu boasts the highest bird, mammal, and plant diversity of any park on Earth, including 1,000 of the world’s 9,700 bird species, 200 species of mammals, and 15,000 species of flowering plants. The most photogenic spectacles are frolicking Giant Otters, 1,000 parrots and macaws at a riverbank clay lick, dancing Cock-of-the-Rock, habituated monkeys, and huge Lowland Tapirs at a forest clay lick.
The Lodge
Manu Wildlife Center Is located in a private, 16,190 ha./40,000-acre rain forest reserve adjacent to the one million-acre protected area named the “Amarakaeri Reserved Zone”. The tapir lick is a comfortable ninety minutes on foot from the lodge, while the macaw lick is a half-hour boat journey plus a short walk away.
Visitors will welcome the amenities and comfort of this lodge, the only one in the Manu lowlands with roomy, private bungalows, en-suite private bathrooms and tiled, hot water showers — especially when arriving from the rustic simplicity of Manu National Park.
Here you can charge batteries, check e-mail, wash your hair and order a drink under the high thatched roof of the grandly spacious all-wooden dining hall, bar and lounge. (Conservation note: the cedar wood used in construction was salvaged from uprooted trees washed downriver by the annual floods).
We offer some lodge based trips that offer a bit more rainforest comfort and some tours that include nights at more basic lodges and camps within Manu National Park. These are a bit more adventurous and rustic. You will find them listed on the Manu Park Wildlife Camp page.
