ACCLIMATIZATION
Acclimatization is the process of the body adjusting to the decreased availability of oxygen at high altitudes. Considering varying altitudes of destinations in Peru, travelers must try to go first to the lower ones before ascending to higher altitude cities. It is a slow process that could demand over a couple of days. Given enough time, your body will adapt to the decrease in oxygen at a specific altitude. Machu Picchu is the lowest place in Cusco region; hence it is the best place to start your trip and acclimatization process.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS PREVENTION
Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) or soroche is a pathological condition that is caused by acute exposure to low air pressure usually above 2,400 meters (approximately 8,000 feet). Machu Picchu is located at 2300 meters/7600 feet above sea level. The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high too quickly; symptoms include a headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, sleep disorder, among others. Before your travel to a high altitude destination, avoid eating too much, and on the arrival day itself, also eat less to avoid altitude sickness. If you stay at a high altitude, rest. Limit any walking or activity; you can explore the area, but take it easy especially on the first day. Drink plenty of water and avoid taking alcoholic beverages.
WEATHER AND WHAT TO WEAR
Machu Picchu has a subtropical highland climate-warm and humid during the day and cold at night-with temperatures varying between
8°C (46° F) and 22°C (72° F). Humidity ranges between 77% and 91% and annual precipitation averages 400-1000 mm (16-39 inches). The dry season is from May to October and the orchid season runs from November to April. The Citadel is surrounded by the Andean Cloud Forest, a wet, tropical forest characterized by a presence of some clouds even in the dry season. It is recommended to wear light cotton clothes during the day, but bring a wet weather coat and warm clothes for the nights. The outdoor Andean sun is strong and sunblocks are strongly recommended as well as mosquito repellants for outings at night.

Please take note that railway companies have imposed luggage limitation on the trains to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo. If going to Machu Picchu, it is important that you bring only necessary clothing and accessories for your visit to the citadel.
