About Sacred Earth Travel

What a long, strange journey it has been!

I first ventured to Central and South America to study Ethnobotany in 1993. It was my dream to travel the world and learn about people and plants, and the cultures that weave both together. After several extended stays in the magical rainforests of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Peru I wanted to share my passion with the world. And thus, the idea of the ‘Sacred Earth‘ website was born.

Sacred Earth – was to be a space where I could write about people, plants and planet earth, and promote the then very new concept of Eco-travel. Sacred Earth was one of the first dedicated eco-travel agencies on the web.

I sincerely believe that if done right, travel can be an ideal route to sustainable development, helping native communities to access much-needed resources. At the same time, it could also help people to connect with nature.

The project grew, slowly at first, but steadily, as I built relationships with like-minded projects and travel professionals in Central and South America.

Many eco-travel agencies have since sprung up. Many genuine, others merely riding the green bandwagon. But at least, the tourism industry as a whole has become much, much more aware of its potential impact.

After some 15 years or so, the initial project had grown so large that I decided to separate them into two succinct websites. Sacred Earth continues to focus on Ethnobotany, green living, and nature education, while Sacred Earth Travel promotes ecological travel adventures in Central and South America, and beyond.
