Climate 

During the rainy season (November-March) the weather is usually clear and dry most mornings, with outbursts of heavy rain in the afternoons. The daily temperatures are typically around 18°C (64ºF) with a slight drop at night, to about 15°C (50ºF). During the dry season (April-October) the weather is generally sunny with hot, dry days (20- 25°C/68º-77ºF) and cold, dry nights, often hovering just above freezing, particularly in June and July. It is recommended that you bring a rainproof coat and warm clothes for nights and time spent inside unheated buildings. The Andean sun is intense, hence sunblock is strongly recommended. 

HEALTH/INSURANCE

Although no vaccinations are officially required, visitors are advised to take precautions, especially if planning to travel to jungle regions. The most common ailments for travelers are diarrhea and altitude sickness. Health care is limited in these areas, so safety measures must be taken regarding food and alcohol intake. At high altitude, it is wise to drink plenty of water and limit alcohol consumption.

COMMUNICATION/ TELEPHONE

Within Peru, when making international calls, dial 00 + country code + city code + telephone number. For inter-city calls: 0 + city code + telephone number. Public telephones work with coins and pre-pay cards that can be acquired in kiosks and supermarkets. Make sure your pre-pay card is for the phone company of your choice. Mobile phones for local and foreign calls can be rented at the Lima Airport. Wi-Fi is available in the majority of hotels in Peru.

ACCLIMATIZATION

Acclimatization is the process of the body adjusting to the decreased availability of oxygen at high altitudes. Considering the varying altitudes of destinations in Peru, travelers should try to begin their trip at lower altitude destinations before ascending to higher altitude destinations like Cusco. Given enough time, your body will adapt to the decreased oxygen in Cusco.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS PREVENTION

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) or “soroche”, is a condition caused by acute exposure to low air pressure usually above 2,400 meters (approximately 8,000 feet). Cusco is located at 3300 meters/ 10,800 feet above sea level. The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high too quickly; symptoms include a headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and sleep disorder. Before your travel to a high altitude destination, avoid eating too much. If you stay at a high altitude, try to have some rest upon arrival. Limit any walking or activity; physically demanding activities are not recommendable for the first day. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages.

LUGGAGE TRANSPORT ALLOWANCE

Please take note that railway companies have imposed luggage limitation on the trains to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo. If going to

Machu Picchu, it is important that you bring only necessary clothing and accessories for your visit to the citadel.
