Machu Picchu Pueblo

Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is an intimate Andean village style hotel with terraced hills, waterfalls, stone pathways and 83 whitewashed adobe casitas tucked away in the cloud forest. Member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, the property has 12 acres of exquisite natural beauty, where 214 bird species – such as the golden-headed quetzal and the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock – and the world’s largest native orchid collection (372 species) have been registered.

After exploring the Historic Sanctuary and in-house excursions, guests can enjoy the Unu Spa, which combines the classic nurturing with a mystical Andean approach. Natural products are derived from local botanical extracts (mint, eucalyptus, and orchids), thus providing a pleasing spiritual, sensual and soothing experience. ACCLIMATIZATION

Acclimatization is the process of the body adjusting to the decreased availability of oxygen at high altitudes. Considering varying altitudes of destinations in Peru, travelers must try to go first to the lower ones before ascending to higher altitude cities. It is a slow process that could demand over a couple of days. Given enough time, your body will adapt to the decrease in oxygen at a specific altitude. Machu Picchu is the lowest place in Cusco region; hence it is the best place to start your trip and acclimatization process.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS PREVENTION

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS) or soroche is a pathological condition that is caused by acute exposure to low air pressure usually above 2,400 meters (approximately 8,000 feet). Machu Picchu is located at 2300 meters/7600 feet above sea level. The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high too quickly; symptoms include a headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, sleep disorder, among others. Before your travel to a high altitude destination, avoid eating too much, and on the arrival day itself, also eat less to avoid altitude sickness. If you stay at a high altitude, rest. Limit any walking or activity; you can explore the area, but take it easy especially on the first day. Drink plenty of water and avoid taking alcoholic beverages.

WEATHER AND WHAT TO WEAR

Machu Picchu has a subtropical highland climate-warm and humid during the day and cold at night-with temperatures varying between
8°C (46° F) and 22°C (72° F). Humidity ranges between 77% and 91% and annual precipitation averages 400-1000 mm (16-39 inches). The dry season is from May to October and the orchid season runs from November to April. The Citadel is surrounded by the Andean Cloud Forest, a wet, tropical forest characterized by a presence of some clouds even in the dry season. It is recommended to wear light cotton clothes during the day, but bring a wet weather coat and warm clothes for the nights. The outdoor Andean sun is strong and sunblocks are strongly recommended as well as mosquito repellants for outings at night.

Please take note that railway companies have imposed luggage limitation on the trains to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo. If going to Machu Picchu, it is important that you bring only necessary clothing and accessories for your visit to the citadel.

CONSERVATION

Initiatives on biodiversity conservation are managed by NGO Inkaterra Asociación. These include the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a bridge system at 100ft above the ground designed to study wildlife in the rainforest canopy; the Spectacled Bear Rescue Center at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, in benefit of the only bear species native to South America; the world’s largest native orchid collection (372 species) found in its natural habitat; and the World Birding Rally, an international competition unique for its non-stop modality, which aims to confirm Peru as a top destination for bird watching. The first Peruvian enterprise to be declared carbon neutral (1989), Inkaterra mitigates the effects of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest whilst contributed with carbon sequestration through the preservation of Peru’s first ecological concession, with more than 10,000 hectares of virgin rainforest. As determined by Professor Tim Baker (University of Leeds), one hectare conserved within Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica o Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion captures 200 tons of carbon.
